Devil (2010) movie review

Devil (film) review
I heard of this movie whilst I was in a rather dark, smelly and dinghy lift in a remote part of China, when one of the occupants turned and said, "Hey, I think we have the same number of people in this lift as that show "Devil" and the lift is equally creepy... so when I saw that this show was available, I decided to check it out, and perhaps debunk or expel this from memory...
M. Night Shyamalan has been doing thrillers since he broke into the big league with Sixth Sense. But he has not been able to break into the the box office top billings with his recent offerings, and his backers will be biting their nails as to whether this will be a flatliner or soar to the top of the box office.
The premise is rather simple : a few people are trapped in an elevator and amongst them is the Devil. You wonder why it was not tried before. Each person comes on board with their own issues, and you see the base nature of people as they come under duress and eventually realise the evil force that is around them...
The plot moves along nicely, with more dead bodies piling up... and of course you realise not everything is what it seems to be...
But WAIT, isn' that what ALL of M. Night Shyamalan's movies are like? Yes, you guessed it, the man has not had much new ideas since he shot to fame with Sixth Sense... the issue here is there is really nothing that new in this, even though the premise is good. Nevetheless, it is still quite an intriguing watch, and you get a front row seat of what human nature is, and what kind of secrets we all hide. The trouble is how neatly it all falls into place.
The actors are not famous, which helps it as the people in the lift look like ordinary people until their dark secrets are revealed.
This show also lends itself to many moments of good surround use, as the claustrophobic environment, plus the good use of sound to heighten the impact and suspense is well done as you would expect for a 2010 modern movie.
Plot: 3/5
Sound 3/5
Chick Factor: 5 people in the lift doesn't really lend itself to any real eye candy...
I reckon M. Night Shyamalan will need to re-invent himself to achieve the dizzying heights of his first big hit, but this movie is still good enough for a rental...

Makes you want to take the stairs from now on....
